NEWS Blackout looms in Nigeria as Kainji Dam bursts

Some Nigerian states may experience blackout following a burst at the Kainji Hydroelectric Dam.

The plant is located in New Bussa town in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The embankments of the dam, one of Nigeria’s hydro-power stations, reportedly caved in after the opening of the four spillway gates to free surplus water caused by heavy rains.

On Sunday, the managers,

Mainstream Energy Solution Limited (MESL) opened the points but discovered that the dam was impounding more water than it should.

“We opened the 4 spillway gates because of the water pressure. Now, it is hitting the embankment and will continue to expand if not reinforced. The embankment is falling, rocks are falling into the water”, an official told Thisday.

The firm is carrying out repairs that could take about 760MW of electricity off the national grid.

Abdulrasaq Jakada, a top official of the Emir of Borgu’s palace said the monarch has been informed of the development.

In a statement on Monday, Olugbenga Adebola, MESL Head of Corporate Communications, said the dam is in full operation and currently supplying power to the national grid.

“The Kainji Hydro Power Plant is currently carrying out water spillage exercise to regulate the water flow along the river Niger. The dam reservoir is currently not at its fullest capacity and will not be in the coming months, therefore bursting its banks does not arise.

“This is an exercise carried out annually to ensure that the reservoir is well secured and that the expected flow of water along the River Niger and its tributaries are controlled”, Adebola noted.

The statement added that the firm was working round the clock to ensure power supply to the nation and integrity of the dam
