NEWS Guyana: US announces visa sanctions, calls President to step aside

The United States has announced visa sanctions on members of Guyana’s ruling government.

America also asked President David Granger to “step aside”.

U.S. said this would ensure the country begins its transition four months after the March 2 disputed elections.

Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, made the call on Thursday.

“The Granger government must respect the results of democratic elections and step aside,” he said at a press briefing.

He announced visa restrictions “on individuals responsible for or complicit in undermining democracy in Guyana.”

President Granger and his ‘A Partnership for National Unity coalition’ have refused to accept the findings of a 33-day recount.

The recount was performed by the Guyana Elections Commission and observed by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

It found that the opposition People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) won the election.

But the ruling government has called for the vote to be annulled.

Authorities cite irregularities and anomalies in the election.
